Gowalla is expanding into Yelp’s territory with the release of three new features that help users discover more about their city while giving businesses more control over presence on the location-based social network. The first of these three new features is City Pages, a web-based interface for exploring what’s popular in 32 different metropolitan areas by tapping into Gowalla’s checkin data to figure out which locations are popular or trending. A Google Map provides the landscape for checking out top restaurants and visualizing Trips, one of Gowalla’s most popular features.

That’s a pretty apt description. Basically, it’s a mobile app designed for business users so that they can network and meet with people they don’t know, but probably should.

Google Needs To Buy Foursquare Now, Before It’s Too Late

Google should buy Foursquare, which will vault Google into the leading position in the next wave of consumer Internet development: location-based services. Based on history, it seems safe to say that whatever Google builds to try to compete with Foursquare will probably flop. Social stuff just isn’t part of Google’s DNA (Orkut, etc.) Even Facebook’s attempt to compete with Foursquare appears to be off to a slow start, and Facebook’s core competency is a lot closer to Foursquare’s than Google’s is.

SCVNGR Set to Surpass 500,000 Users

SCVNGR CEO and founder Seth Priebatsch tells Mashable that the location-based app that competes with the likes of Foursquare and Gowalla is set to hit 500,000 users. The milestone comes just five months after SCVNGR released its consumer-facing iPhone and Android apps in the U.S. By comparison, Gowalla reported 450,000 members in early September.

O2, owned by Telefonica, is letting customers opt in to receive discounts and offers from businesses as they walk near one of their outlets. It’s a step towards the wider adoption of location-based advertising, already in practice in the U.S., which reaches us via our cellphones and is set to become much, much bigger. The total consumer market for location-based services on our mobiles will expand to $3.8 billion in revenue annually by 2012, according to Gartner Research, and 37% of that will come from advertising. The ad man’s cut of the revenue is set to nearly double to 63% by 2014.
